After a year of virtual happy hours and backyard hangouts, you and your girlfriends are ready for a real vacation. If your pod is headed to Dominican Republic, you can rest assured knowing it’s one of the safest destinations in the world. Dominican Republic continues to take extensive safety measures during the pandemic, including increased safety protocols and antigen testing for tourists. Plus, this sprawling natural playground easily lends itself social distancing and small group travel.

Wondering how to make the most of your time together in Dominican Republic? We’re sharing the perfect itinerary featuring beachy Punta Cana and the picturesque coastal paradise of Miches. And with direct flights from cities across the U.S., it’s easy to get all the girls together in Dominican Republic no matter where you’re coming from.

Day 1: Relax and recharge together at the resort.

On your first full day in Dominican Republic, replenish with a breakfast of delectable fresh papaya and passionfruit and local dishes like mangú (mashed green plantains) at your resort. If your group rises early, take a morning walk to the beach to catch the sun rise over the Caribbean.

After breakfast, enjoy a full day of R&R with the girls. Head to a yoga class under a palapa to greet the day with sun salutations. Afterwards, find Zen at the spa with a treatment or massage, then kick back poolside or at the beach.

Cap off your first day in Dominican Republic with a golden hour sunset photo shoot on the beach, then enjoy dinner with the girls at the resort.

Day 2: Pump up your adrenaline and explore Punta Cana.

After a restful night’s sleep, wake up recharged and ready for adventure at Scape Park. This Cap Cana attraction is a sprawling green space replete with outdoor adventures in a natural setting. Pack your swimsuit for an exhilarating dip in the Hoyo Azul turquoise cenote, cave swimming and ziplining over the water.

After an active morning, transition into relaxation at BlueMall Puntacana or at Puntacana Village, which are home to numerous restaurants and shops. Enjoy lunch at La Casita de Yeya where your pod can dine on the covered patio and indulge in traditional Dominican dishes like mashed plantain with garlic and pork or shrimp mofongo and savory sancocho stew.

After lunch, visit the colorful mural wall to admire exuberant street art created by local artists. It’s a can’t-miss spot for a group photo before heading back to the resort to unwind for the evening.

Day 3: Sun, fun and wine in Miches.

Rise and shine: Today your group departs Punta Cana and heads an hour northwest to Miches. The town was once a sleepy fishing village but has recently risen on the tourism radar thanks to its unspoiled beaches and stunning views from the top of Montaña Redonda.

After checking in at your hotel, enjoy a beach day at Playa Esmeralda. This expansive oasis offers more beach space than beachgoers, leaving plenty of room for your pod to spread out and relax under the shade of the palm trees.

As the sun starts to go down, enjoy a sunset horseback ride on the beach and a wine tasting at your resort before a world-class dinner with the girls.

Day 4: Sunrise views and stunning nature.

Today’s wakeup call arrives early, but it’s worth it. Rise before the sun to take a journey on a four-wheeler to the top of Montaña Redonda. Once you reach the top, take in the exquisite 360-degree views of the landscape below where valley meets sea. Savor the moment on a swing on the edge of the mountain—the perfect spot for a high-flying selfie—or enjoy the panoramic views from a bench while sipping a cup of local coffee from the mountaintop café.

Return to your resort in Miches and then head out on the water for a half day trip to Los Haitises National Park via speed boat or catamaran. Los Haitises is the crown jewel of Dominican Republic’s park system, with magnificent rock formations, dense mangroves, abundant wildlife and a series of caves famous for their ancient Taíno pictographs. After exploring the park, head back to the resort to wash up and enjoy a final dinner together at your resort’s upscale steakhouse.

Day 5: Send-off in style with yoga and one last pool day.

Wake up and recenter before the trip home with sunrise yoga in a treetop canopy at the resort. Practice under a palapa and flow into your next pose while surrounded by a lush palm grove.

After checking out, take your transportation back to the Punta Cana International Airport. For one final indulgence with the girls, treat yourselves to a stay in the airport’s VIP lounge, which boasts the Caribbean’s only airport pool. Order a premium cocktail and take one last dip to put the cherry on top of a perfect girls trip.

If you’ve been quarantined at home with your partner for the past year, you’re probably eager to leave town, recharge and enjoy a change of scenery together.

Collette and Scott, the couple behind the popular travel blog Roamaroo, recently visited Dominican Republic for a romantic escape that was both rejuvenating and exhilarating. If you’re seeking inspiration for your own trip for two, read on to discover an itinerary inspired by Collette and Scott’s recent retreat to Dominican Republic.

  1. Start by checking into your preferred home away from home for the week.

Punta Cana’s sweeping all-inclusive resorts provide ample space to spread out on the beach or by the pool. Book a private villa, swim-up suite or even a room with your own private plunge pool—it makes the perfect romantic home base in Punta Cana and naturally lends itself to social distancing.

After you check in, enjoy a private sunset dinner on the beach for two, a relaxing couples’ massage or a lazy day together with your toes in the soft white sand while the waves lap at your feet.

  1. Take a day trip to picture-perfect mountaintop views.

After soaking in some R&R at your resort, venture out on a one-hour trip to Miches, one of Dominican Republic’s most popular new destinations.

Once you arrive in Miches, take a journey on a four-wheeler to the top of Montaña Redonda. The bumpy ride is worth it once you reach the top of the mountain, where benches and swings overlook sweeping vistas of the ocean and lush valley below. Sip a cup of coffee at a mountaintop café or order a cocktail made with Dominican Rum to enjoy while you soak in the soaring views and take a selfie together.

  1. Get active and enjoy nature at Scape Park.

Conveniently located in Cap Cana near the resorts and villas of Punta Cana, Scape Park is an adventure lover’s playground. The sprawling green space is home to Hoyo Azul, a turquoise cenote that invites you to dive in for a refreshing swim.

Other activities include hiking through the tropical flora of the botanical gardens, horseback riding, ziplining, ATVing, snorkeling, and exploring a vast underground network of caves and tunnels on the Iguabonita Cave Expedition.

  1. Savor a taste of divine local goods.

If chocolate, fine cigars, coffee and traditional Dominican goods like crafts and jewelry are your love language, plan an afternoon together at the Mundo Auténtico shopping complex in Bávaro. This cultural epicenter includes four main shops with food, drink and smokes that exude the essence of the Dominican Republic.

The complex is home to the Don Lucas Cigar Factory, which offers free tours and a chance to puff on some of the finest hand-rolled cigars in the country. Afterwards, visit the Chocomuseo, where guided tours on the history of Dominican cacao include a delicious tasting of milk, white and dark chocolates made from local cacao pods. Some tours include a tasting of mamajuana, a local specialty drink made with rum, wine and a unique blend of bark and herbs—the locals say it’s an aphrodisiac.

After you’ve experienced cigars and chocolate, head to the Coffee Museum for a pick-me-up. Here, you’ll not only see, smell and touch real coffee beans, you’ll also learn how Dominican coffee is grown, harvested and turned into your favorite hot beverage. Then you’ll get to taste some. There are a variety of brews you can take back home to help you ease back into the grind.

Finally, be sure to visit the Mundo Autentico Shop on your way out to pick up a Dominican souvenir to bring home with you! From one-of-a-kind jewelry made from local larimar or amber to a Faceless Doll, you’ll find it all here. Learn more about some can’t-miss souvenirs here.

  1. Set off to a secluded island on a yacht.

Pick a day for a romantic expedition on the Caribbean. You’ll start with a drive west to Casa de Campo in La Romana, one of the most opulent resorts in the region. This luxurious property is also home to Teeth of the Dog, a world-renowned oceanfront course designed by Pete Dye—don’t miss the chance to sneak in some time on the green if you’re golfers.

From Casa de Campo’s marina, set off on a private yacht for secluded Isla Catalina. This undeveloped island is just a quick trip off the shore of La Romana and a perfect destination to disconnect from the stress of daily life, with powder-fine white sand, calm waters and thriving coral reefs that are great for snorkeling or diving.

  1. Enjoy peace of mind with enhanced safety protocols.

Dominican Republic is one of the safest international destinations for your trip for two. The country has taken extra steps to ensure the health and safety of tourists and hospitality workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

All international travelers arriving on commercial flights and staying at a hotel are granted free health coverage for any medical care needed in the event of exposure to COVID-19, and viral antigen testing is also available. Please contact your hotel directly to inquire about their specific process or make an appointment.  More info about coronavirus safety and precautions can be found here.

  1. Take one last dip in the airport pool before takeoff.

Your escape from cabin fever and Zoom meetings doesn’t end when you arrive at the airport. Extend your quality time together by treating yourselves to a visit to Punta Cana International Airport’s VIP lounge. This luxe corner of the airport boasts an infinity swimming pool where you can take one last dip and watch the jets take off before catching your flight home.

Check out Roamaroo’s vacation vlog from Dominican Republic to see their adventure in action.

Puerto Plata is one of Dominican Republic’s most charming cities, with stunning coastal views where mountains meet sea. Surfers flock here for the choppy Atlantic waves and warm sunrays, but Puerto Plata isn’t just for beach bums and athletes. This city and province in northern Dominican Republic are brimming with stunning nature, centuries of history and colorful nightlife.

Want to get the full Puerto Plata experience on your next getaway? Put these 10 activities at the top of your list:

1. Explore technicolor downtown Puerto Plata

The colorful colonial and Victorian-style houses dotted throughout Puerto Plata are a feast for the eyes. Admire the historic architecture and the dreamy pastel color schemes while enjoying local ice-cream at Parque Independencia — and sure, go ahead and take a selfie! For additional historical context, stop by the Casa de Cultura for a quick history lesson and a tour of the historic three-story Victorian building.

2. Visit the Anfiteatro la Puntilla

La Puntilla is a stunning 22,000-square-foot outdoor amphitheater facing the Atlantic Ocean. With room for more than 4,000 spectators, this outdoor venue opened in 2017 and regularly hosts concerts, dance performances and other cultural events.

3. Take a cable car to Mount Isabel de Torres

Puerto Plata is where you’ll find the Caribbean’s only cable car, which takes visitors to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres―a whopping 2,600 feet above the rolling green hills below. From the top, enjoy sweeping views of the Christ the Redeemer statue and the ocean and shoreline in the distance. The peak is also home to botanical gardens that are ripe for exploration.

4. Slide down a series of waterfalls

If you’ve ever wanted to truly experience waterfalls—not just admire them—plan a day at the 27 Charcos of Damajagua. You’ll start your adventure on a hike through a thick forest before reaching a rocky hilltop where you’ll descend by jumping or sliding down a series of waterfalls. Local outfitters supply guides and safety equipment. All you need is to show up with a taste for adventure. Most excursions take you through seven or twelve of the 27 falls where you’ll slide down into deep turquoise pools.

You can also plan waterfall excursions off the beaten path at Charcos de los Militares Magic Mushroom Río Jamao and Ciguapa Falls.

5. Descend into the amber mines

The north coast of Dominican Republic is famous for producing some of the clearest and oldest amber in the world. Tour the amber mines in the hills of La Cumbre. You’ll learn about the history and characteristics of amber before hiking to the mines that run 200 feet deep. You can also purchase raw amber on-site for a steep discount from jewelry store prices.

Fun fact: The famous amber in “Jurassic Park” containing prehistoric insects was inspired by Dominican amber pieces.

6. Learn about military history at the Fortaleza San Felipe

The Fortaleza San Felipe dates back to the 16th century, when the Spaniards built it to defend the coast from pirates. The fort is considered one of the most important colonial military structures in the Caribbean. Starting in the 1800s through the years of the Trujillo dictatorship, it served as a prison. Today, it’s a museum that invites visitors to explore original canons, weapons and hidden chambers.

7. Go snorkeling or diving at Cayo Arena

Not far off the coast of Puerto Plata sits Cayo Arena—also known, aptly, as Cayo Paraíso (Paradise Key). The sandbank is a popular destination for divers and snorkelers eager for a view of colorful tropical fish. Get up close and personal with octopuses, crabs, surgeonfish, angelfish and yellowtail snappers, then relax on the beach and soak in the pristine surroundings. Connect with your hotel concierge upon arrival to plan your excursion.

8. Experience Wildlife Encounters

Visitors who dream of swimming with dolphins can fulfill their wish at Ocean World Adventure Park, located in Cofresí, just over five kilometers (three miles) west of Puerto Plata city. Aside from dolphins, children and adults can enjoy a multitude of marine experiences, from shows with sea lions and nurse sharks to an exotic bird area, and snorkeling in an artificial coral reef aquarium filled with hundreds of tropical fish. For more adventure, try the giant slide that throws you into the artificial swimming lagoon.

9. Learn to Kiteboard

Puerto Plata is a world-class kiteboarding, windsurfing and laser sailing destination due to its warm waters and perfect wind conditions year-round. Cabarete, is very popular among the young and adventurous because of the laid-back atmosphere and aquatic sports offered on its beach, its famous annual jazz festival each fall and its eclectic bars, cafes, restaurants and shops.

10. Eat, drink and be merry

Fill your plate at one of Puerto Plata’s most emblematic restaurants, including La Parrillada—one of the oldest in town. In nearby Cabarete, the entire beach is lined with restaurants selling fresh seafood, tostones and other local fare. You can also find local organic coffee and cacao to enjoy on your trip or bring back home.

11. Find your perfect beach

No Puerto Plata trip would be complete without visiting the world-class beaches along Dominican Republic’s north coast. Whether you’re a surfer, a kiteboarder or you’re simply looking for a sunny spot to unwind with a good book, the options throughout Puerto Plata are plentiful.

Tired of sifting through depressing travel data? Well, we have a positive travel case with negative strains of Covid19 as it appears the Dominican Republic is dominating the Caribbean in terms of international travellers. Yes, ForwardKeys has some good travel news for you.

Growth for the Dominican Republic

According to the latest air ticketing data, the Dominican Republic is emerging out of the pandemic better of now compared to the gloomy start to 2020.

“The Dominican Republic is a really good example of how governments should be handling this current Covid-19 crisis as you can clearly see through this chart the peaks and troughs of international arrivals pending on government announcements and the safety measures put in place,” says Olivier Ponti, VP of Insights at ForwardKeys.

Ponti adds: “The other important point worth mentioning is keeping your borders open. Just like Mexico and other destinations in the Caribbean, intra-regional travel greatly benefited from travellers keen to escape the US.”

Destination Marketing during a Pandemic

Covid-19 has wreaked havoc on the tourism sector in many ways, beyond just halting international flights. In the New Normal, volatility is here to stay, despite the roll-out of the vaccine. Travel restrictions, quarantines and limited seat capacity are taking its toll on where travellers can safely travel which in turn has changed the lead booking times.

“If we look at the whole of 2020, average lead times were 120 days. However, by December, they decreased to the 2019 average of 72 days,” says Juan Gomez, Senior Analyst at ForwardKeys.

In terms of destination marketing, Danny Callaghan, CEO of LATA, says: “Reinstalling traveller confidence must be the priority for all tourism destinations.”  He adds: “The consumer attitude towards brands and destinations is changing, something tourism authorities need to factor, to give them the full advantage of recovery once travellers begin to plan their next adventure.”

New Market Opportunities for the Caribbean

Digging deeper into the data at ForwardKeys, two juicy trends emerged regarding key US cities for tourism to the Dominican Republic and more surprisingly, the growth of a new passenger type.

The Dominican Republic has an advantage over some of its neighbours in the Caribbean, a strong market share in the US, not just in Europe (where sadly tougher travel conditions have been put into place). As such it was the sun-seeking travellers from the U.S West Coast that held the most market share. The top three cities being New York, Miami and Boston.

And no, it wasn’t just the VFR segment propping up the travel trade to and from the US. According to the latest Air Ticket Data, in the second half of 2020, VFR accounted for 18% while Leisure took up 73% of the market share. Groups were 8% and Business Travel 2%.

Now, here is an interesting finding. The passenger type per ticket has changed. Previously the destination attracted couples – in 2019 couples made 30% of the market. However, in 2020, it was singles ready to mingle. Or simply seeking to escape the stress of Covid-19 in the US. Indeed, by the 2nd half of 2020, singles or solo travellers took up over 35% of the market share. Up by 10% YoY.

ForwardKeys reached out to the Ministry of Tourism in the Dominican Republic to uncover what they thought was triggering this increase in solo travellers. Liliana Cruz from the Intelligence Unit thinks it’s due to working remotely. “Teleworking in this pandemic has made possible the dream of working from the beach, the mountain, and any other tourist spot. The Dominican Republic has emerged as the perfect destination for that because of the top and robust structure built to protect our visitors. Our Plan for the Responsible Recovery of Tourism includes, amongst other features, full medical and traveller free insurance against COVID-19 and other illnesses for our tourists, rigorous implementation of internationally approved protocols, and the most active policies to preserve the health of our people and our visitors.”

Meanwhile, David Collado, Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic commented: “There are a few reasons why the Dominican Republic appeals to single travellers. Firstly, single travellers tend to engage in more activities, so they are attracted by the hiking, kayaking, surfing, wildlife and birdwatching that are in such abundance in the destination. As people return to travel, these socially distant activities taking place in our beautiful, big open National Parks and long beaches are particularly appealing. It’s also a very safe and welcoming country, which is always of key consideration for single travellers. We have globally recognised hotel brands, which give a sense of security for those travelling alone, but also small hotels with a warm family welcome that provide a friendly environment in which to meet other travellers.”

We hope this article has injected some hope and enthusiasm back into your day. It is reassuring to see examples of destinations that are being well managed by their governments and tourism bodies, progressing forward despite the pandemic.

Even though trips abroad might not be possible right now, we’re planning our ultimate escape for when travel can resume. One destination we’ve bookmarked is a Caribbean escape to the Dominican Republic: offering everything from white-sand beaches to ecotourism to colonial city charm, it’s got something for everyone. Here’s our pick of places to stay.

HOLIDAYS TO DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 2021

CASAS DEL XVI, SANTO DOMINGO

Whilst holidaymakers head straight to the beautiful beaches of the Dominican Republic’s vast Caribbean coastline, it’s well worth making an excursion for a night or two to the country’s capital, the UNESCO World Heritage Site colonial city of Santo Domingo. The stunning Casas del XVI is a collection of thoughtfully renovated properties dating back to the 16th century located in the heart of this historic centre.

If you can manage to peel yourself away from your beautifully carved wooden bed or the courtyard pool, you’ll be rewarded with the charming sights of the historical old town on your doorstep. Spend the afternoon wandering around the atmospheric religious buildings and soaking up the social buzz of the nearby squares, then refuel with a traditional hot chocolate at the Kahkow Experience.

Here you’ll learn how chocolate is made – the flavour is so good that barely any milk and sugar is needed, so you can justify stashing a couple of bars away to fuel more sightseeing. Make sure to stop off at Jenny Polanco boutique to pick up some outfits for the rest of your stay – the designer is known for her crisp, clean white linens embellished with subtle jewels that ooze Caribbean chic.

For 2021, Casas del XVI is running a #StaySmallStayLonger campaign offering guests a complimentary 3rd night when they book a 2-night stay. With freestanding baths overlooking your room’s stunning artwork and killer margaritas served with fresh local ceviche by your courtyard pool, you’ll be glad you extended the trip.

CASA DE CAMPO, LA ROMANA

Dripping in Hollywood legacy and Hamptons luxury, Casa de Campo and its mansion villa homes have attracted A-list celebrities, politicians and royals for decades, recently including Jay-Z and Beyonce, the Kardashians, Taron Egerton, Richard Branson, Michael Jordan, Drake, Alycia Keys, Bill Clinton and many more.

It’s easy to see why this huge 7,000-acre resort in the Dominican Republic has long been a favourite for the rich and famous: from a beautiful marina full of megayachts, to the top-rated golf course in the Caribbean, to chic beach clubs and even a replica of a 16th-century European village, there’s something for everyone at Casa de Campo.

Guests can either stay in hotel rooms and make use of complimentary golf carts to get around, or for the ultimate experience get a group of friends together and stay in one of the resort’s spectacular villas with private pools. Private chefs are on hand to prepare barbecue dinners after a day of partying by the pool at SBG or to refuel after a game of tennis at one of the resort’s 13 courts. The resort also boasts exceptional horse riding and polo facilities, and runs equine retreats with unlimited horseback rides.

A seven night holiday through British Airways Holidays departing on 4 April 2021 from London Gatwick and including accommodation on all-inclusive basis in a Superior Casita room (based on 2 sharing) currently costs from £1,628 per person. Villas can be booked directly through the resort’s website and benefit from full access to resort facilities.

KI-RA HOLSTIC LIVING, LA ROMANA

If your kind of luxury is more about nourishing your soul and disconnecting from the outside world, Ki-Ra Holistic Living is the perfect escape. A family-run Bohemian retreat located off the beaten track, join a retreat or simply book a few nights in an oceanfront tent for an experience like no other. After a few days of spectacular sunsets, wholesome Ayurvedic food and nurturing yoga classes, you’ll feel completely rejuvenated.

British owners Kyra and Simon built Ki-Ra from scratch on a patch of jagged coastline surrounded by jungle, sensing the powerful healing properties of the land and its location. Kyra is a naturopathic doctor and oversees the preparation of exquisite meals made from herbs grown in the on-site garden, as well as teaching yoga classes and offering massages and therapies.

If you’re looking for a place to escape and recharge, this is for you. Scheduled 3-day retreats start at $600 per person, and rooms including full board and yoga from $205 per night (~£150) per night.

HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO, PUNTA CANA

If your kind of holiday involves limitless pampering, cocktails on tap and hassle-free dining, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is the resort for you. With 9 restaurants and 23 bars and lounges, you’ll need to stay longer than a week just to experience them all: from perfectly-cooked fillet steak to flaming teppanyaki, even the pickiest of eaters won’t be disappointed. Oh, and did we mention they’ll deliver unlimited slices of Oreo cheesecake to your room, 24 hours a day? That’s before we even get started on the cocktails…

Fortunately there’s a state-of-the-art fitness centre with on-demand Les Mills classes – including a full spin studio – to help work up an appetite. For those who prefer to work out in private, all rooms include on-demand yoga videos. And if you’d rather spend your holiday lying vertical by the pool or on the beach, there are 13 pools to choose from, where your pina colada glass will be constantly topped up.

Seven nights at the five-star Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana costs from just £1,211 per person through British Airways Holidays. Price is based on two adults sharing a Caribbean Suite King Room on an All-Inclusive Basis and includes direct return flights from London Gatwick with British Airways, transfers, and Limitless Resort Credits to be used towards spa and salon treatments, golf and tours and excursions.

NEED MORE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC INSPIRATION?

Still not completely sold on a stay at any of the above? Perhaps the adults-only vibe at TRS Turquesa is more your thing, where seven nights all-inclusive starts at £1,095 per person through British Airways Holidays. Sister hotel Grand Palladium also caters to families, or for a more secluded, exclusive feel, book a villa at the Oscar de la Renta-designed Tortuga Bay, where a seemingly endless stretch white-sand beach is footsteps away from your door – and treatments at the Caribbean’s only Six Senses Spa await.

A new year brings a new opportunity to expand your horizons—and to break out of your 2020 rut.

Travelers looking for bucket list-worthy adventures can find endless inspiration in Dominican Republic. From paragliding over lush green valleys to whale watching in the Silver Bank, the country is teeming with opportunities to find your next thrill and make memories that will last a lifetime.

From adrenaline-pumping action to colorful culture, here are six adventures you don’t want to miss in Dominican Republic this year!

1. Embark on a whale watching adventure in the Samaná Peninsula.

Kick off the year with a journey to the northeast corner of Dominican Republic. Every year from January through March, thousands of humpback whales arrive to the Samaná Peninsula for mating season. Boat tours take tourists on the water to catch a glimpse of the majestic mammals, and specialized tour operators give animal lovers a chance to swing alongside the whales in a safe environment. You can also catch a glimpse of the 40-ton whales from land at Punta Balandra.

2. Go rafting on the longest river in the Country.

Dominican Republic is home to the Yaque Del Norte River—the longest river in the country. Starting in Jarabacoa, set off on a rafting adventure that features level-two rapids. Book a day trip with local outfitters that provide certified guides, training and safety equipment as they lead you along the most thrilling sections of the rushing river.

3. Paraglide through central Dominican Republic.

If you’ve always dreamed of flying, take to the skies over the mountains and valleys of Jarabacoa and Constanza on a paragliding tour. You’ll strap in alongside a certified professional instructor then glide over the waterfalls, villages and fields below. Time your session around sunset to catch a birds-eye view of the countryside at golden hour.

4. Slide down waterfalls in Puerto Plata.

Dominican Republic is a prime destination for canyoning and rappelling, with rugged rainforests and waterfalls that naturally lend themselves to active adventures. The 27 Charcos de Damajagua waterfalls near Puerto Plata is one of the country’s most popular spots for canyoning. You’ll start your journey by hiking through dense forest, then descend by sliding down a series of waterfalls into the turquoise pools below.

5. ATV through the countryside.

Get behind the wheel of an ATV or a quad as you embark on an inland safari. Tours are offered from Puerto Plata to Punta Cana, taking riders through unspoiled nature and local villages. The trip is the perfect opportunity to literally veer off the beaten path and get to know locals along the way.

6. Go island hopping from coast to coast.

Ever dream of visiting multiple islands on the same vacation? In Dominican Republic, you’re in luck!

In addition to the mainland’s sparkling beaches, the DR boasts multiple offshore cayes with an even more stunning sea and sand environment. Hop on a catamaran sail to breathtaking Saona or Catalina islands, not only the perfect diving and snorkeling location but home to the Caribbean’s longest natural pool, and beaches stretching as far as the eye can see against iridescent turquoise waters. Cayo Arena, off the coast of Puerto Plata, is ideal for a snorkeling trip. Off the coast of Samaná, Cayo Levantado is a perfect lunch and swim escape—often included in tours of Los Haitises, but you can also overnight at the on—site, luxury resort. Off the coast of Montecristi are the most off-the-beaten track cays of the Siete Hermanos.

Pedernales in the southwest corner of Dominican Republic is a coastal province that’s ripe for adventure. From exploring neighboring Lago Enriquillo, the largest hypersaline lake in the Caribbean and the region’s lowest point, to hiking Jaragua National Park, one of the most important natural reserves in the country and part of the first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Dominican Republic, Pedernales boasts endless beauty and adventure.

Explore the desert-like landscape and pristine nature in Pedernales by checking out some of these highlights on your next trip.

1. Visit part of the country’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Jaragua National Park is one of the most important natural reserves in the country and part of the first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Dominican Republic, the La Selle-Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enquirillo Transboundary Biosphere Reserve (Dominican Republic/Haiti). The park spans 530 square miles and is filled with diverse ecosystems from sea to land. It includes Beata and Alto Velo islands, as well as Los Frailes and Piedra Negra cayes. It also houses a dizzying array of flora and fauna.

Keep an eye out for manatees and turtles on the water and more than 130 species of birds in the air and on land, including American flamingos. You may also spot the rare, endangered rhinoceros iguana and Ricord’s rock iguana roaming among more than 400 species of tropical flora. From a geological point of view, the area has a wide variety of igneous and sedimentary rocks dating to the late Jurassic (140 million years).

2. Relax at the country’s most beautiful beach.

Tucked within Jaragua National Park, Bahía de las Águilas is a stunning, unspoiled stretch of white-sand beach that stretches for five miles. This beach has widely been lauded as the most beautiful in the country, with sparkling turquoise waters and a unique rocky landscape. There are no hotels, shops or restaurants along these shores, and the beach is only accessible by ATV or boat.

3. Visit the largest hypersaline lake in the Caribbean and the region’s lowest point.

Lago Enriquillo covers a whopping 135 square miles and is home to American crocodiles, pink flamingos, iguanas and countless bird species. Take a boat trip around to Isla Cabritos in the middle of the lake and remember to dress for the heat—you’ll want a hat, plenty of water and sunscreen. Learn more about this must visit beautiful, body of water here!

4. Tour the largest wind farm in the region.

Parque Eólico Los Cocos is the largest wind farm in the Caribbean. The formidable wind turbines stand as tall as a 40-floor building and generate enough power to keep one million light bulbs lit or providing clean energy for 100,000 homes. One-hour tours are offered to learn about the wind farm’s operations.

5. Chow down on local cuisine.

When visiting Pedernales, don’t miss your chance to sample the local specialty: Spiny lobster. Spiny lobsters are found along the continental belt and get the name from the forward-pointing spines that cover their bodies to help protect them from predators. Restaurants like King Crab, Jalicar and Perla Negra prepare the dish grilled to order.

6. Relax or dive at Cabo Rojo.

Cabo Rojo is one of the most popular beaches in Pedernales. Aside from swimming and relaxing on the shore, it’s also a hub for skilled scuba divers who come to appreciate the technicolor marine life, which feature some of the best preserved coral reefs in the country.

7. Explore the Hoyo de Pelempito observatory.

The long ride up to the top of Hoyo de Pelempito is worth the journey. From 4,265 feet high, you’ll have sweeping views of the vast and distinct landscape below that morphs from desert to cloud forest. Hike the trails at the top near the observatory and remember to pack for altitude changes and temperature swings: highs can reach near 80 degrees by day, and the mornings can be as chilly as 32 degrees.

Dominican Republic is a mecca for animal and nature lovers for many reasons. Over 7,500 animal species can be found throughout the country. The endemic species that can be found in the country include 32 bird species, 4 mammal species, 147 reptilian species and 2,569 invertebrate species. Whether you’re a bird watcher, a fan of amphibians and reptilians or hoping to catch a glimpse of majestic sea mammals, Dominican Republic is full of fascinating fauna.

To help in your exploration, here are three animals that you can see in their natural habitats while in Dominican Republic.

  1. Whales in Samaná

Off the northeast region coast of Samaná, 1,500 to 2,000 humpback whales migrate every year to mate, give birth and nurse their calves. The whale watching season runs from January to March and draws more than 50,000 visitors each year.

If you want to see these gentle giants for yourself, book a guided boat tour or watch whales on land from the observatory at Punta Balandra. Extreme aficionados can book an experience with a local outfitter to swim alongside the whales in the ocean. Be sure to use a professional guide through a reputable company that is committed to ensuring peaceful encounters between humans and whales.

Looking for more information about our friendly visitors? Make sure to visit the Whale Museum, located in the town of Santa Bárbara de Samaná. Exhibits include the full, 40-foot skeleton of a humpback whale found in 1993 along the rocky coastline between Santa Bárbara de Samaná and Las Galeras.

  1. Rhinoceros iguanas in the Southwest Region

The rhinoceros iguana is native to Hispaniola island, and it’s also a protected species. One of the best places to catch a glimpse of the rare iguana is inside the protected Lago Enriquillo and Isla Cabritos National Park, located between the provinces of Independencia and Bahoruco. The rhinoceros iguana can also be spotted in other dry areas such as Peravia, Barahona, Pedernales, Montecristi, Cotubanamá National Park and Isla Beata.

Within Jaragua National Park, head to the Laguna de Oviedo to watch for iguanas. This saltwater lake is the largest lagoon in the country. It’s also a prime bird-watching area, where you can also spot great egrets, pelicans, herons and flamingos. Book a one- to three-hour tour early in the morning for the best wildlife viewing, and to avoid the intense midday heat.

Fun fact: Dominican Republic is the only country in the Caribbean with two endemic species of rock iguanas: rhinoceros iguana (Cyclura cornuta) and Ricord´s iguana (Cyclura ricordii).

  1. Birds at Los Haitises National Park

Dominican Republic is home to 32 endemic bird species, and one of the best ways to see them for yourself is on a birdwatching excursion to the Los Haitises National Park in Samaná.

This eco-paradise in the northeast of the country is known for its distinctive mangroves, which are accessible by boat and offer the best wildlife sightings. Keep an eye out for bird colonies and the endangered Ridgway’s Hawk, woodpeckers, piculets, pelicans, herons, the Hispaniolan Amazon or Cotorra and countless other birds. For a more active adventure, conquer the mangroves by kayak and take in the lush site of one of Dominican Republic’s last remaining rainforests.

Los Haitises National Park is home to 230 bird species, out of which 78 are resident, 13 are endemic and 32 are migratory, making it the perfect location for birdwatchers.

On the Samaná Peninsula, innovative eco-lodges are highlighting the region’s untamed natural bounty. Here’s how to take a swing around one of the country’s less-traveled corners.

“It’s surprising that in a country so commercialized, you can still find places like this,” Noemi Araujo said as we passed a For Sale sign on a fenced, wooded lot. The owner of Clave Verde Ecolodge, where my partner, Luis, and I were staying, was also our guide for the two-hour hike down the uneven road that begins near the hotel and leads to the stunning shoreline at Playa Morón. Cicadas buzzed in the thick tropical forest around us, piercing the humid afternoon air. Seconds later, she told us to look up: speckled brown palmchats, the national bird of the Dominican Republic, were flying in and out of their three-story nest at the tip of a royal palm.

We saw more goats than people until we reached a roadside stall, where a couple was selling fresh coco bread outside their home. We bought two oven-warm bundles for $1.25 each. Soon, a shortcut through the forest led us to the secluded golden beach we’d been seeking. A handful of teenagers were swimming in the turquoise water. At the end of the sandy stretch, a steep, forested trail led to another beach, Playa Limón — miles of virgin sand lined with coconut trees. A fisherman dragged his net out of the water as his canoe approached the shore. Next to a solitary shack, a woman tended to her fogón, the outdoor hearth where she would soon prepare the fresh catch for lunch. The three of us waded into the cool, shallow waters where the Limón River meets the sea.

Over the past 15 years, I’ve explored more than 20 islands in the Caribbean, but no place grabs me quite like the over-the-top tropical splendor of the Samaná Peninsula: scenic coves, craggy cliffs, seemingly endless coconut groves, just 100 miles from my home in Santo Domingo, where I’ve lived since 2016. Humpback whales visit Samaná every January to mate and calve. The area’s beachside resort towns — Las Terrenas and Las Galeras — are popular escapes from the capital, both for locals like Luis and me and for travelers in search of a quieter alternative to Punta Cana.

But the hills and valleys of the peninsula’s interior were harder to get to know — until now. Dominican-owned eco-lodges are opening up in these rural communities, honoring nature with their use of locally sourced materials, guided excursions into the biodiverse forest, and meals sourced from their own permaculture gardens. In a time when we all want to be away from the crowds — and the Caribbean starts to reopen borders — this part of Samaná is a welcome break.

One of the pioneers is the campesino-chic Clave Verde, where Luis and I stayed on a weekend trip this fall. Araujo and her husband, Jonathan, founded the solar-powered property after relocating from Santo Domingo to the mountain village of La Barbacoa. The lodge, surrounded by forest trails and groves of native trees like almond, cherry, and acacia, is just a 15-minute drive from Las Terrenas, where Araujo suggested lunch after our beach hike.

We walked past the fish market to a row of new open-air restaurants facing the beach. Locals enjoyed just-caught seafood and Presidente beer, while a couple danced barefoot to bachata music. Scanning the chalkboard menus, we settled in at Candelita, where we ordered a typical Dominican seaside meal: fried capitán, as hogfish is known here, with a side of tostones and avocado. When we left two hours later, the cacophonous motorbike traffic along the beach made us appreciate Clave Verde’s location in the hills.

The next day, we woke to cows mooing over the bluffs as if announcing the sun rising over the village. I stepped onto our balcony and looked out on the forest canopy as the fresh morning air filtered into our suite. Breakfast of fried eggs and mashed green bananas fueled us for the drive to Las Galeras, a small fishing town renowned for its beaches. It’s party-hard bar scene was once the main draw. But now, community members and municipal officials are working to create ecotourism experiences that showcase the area’s natural wealth — like the new Seven Hidden Beaches trail, which winds past sea caves along the area’s less developed coastline.

We came to the end of Samaná’s sole highway, and views of the ocean disappeared as we turned off at the sign for the village of La Guázuma. Walking into the seven-key Casa El Paraíso, we were plunged into a kind of miniature nature reserve, with fruit trees, palms, and purple Mexican petunias framing a narrow stone path. Butterflies circled my legs, and cicadas echoed off the timber walls. We reached an open-air lounge with sculptures and Balinese-style wooden furniture set against the panorama of Samaná Bay.

José Raúl Nova — a respected Santo Domingo veterinarian who tended to the pets of the late Oscar de la Renta — initially built the property as a vacation home. Nova showed us around the botanical paradise, which he and his wife, Nora Mejía, transformed into an eco-hotel two years ago. Its high-ceilinged thatched bungalows were inspired by the owners’ travels: the nautical Marina, where de la Renta once stayed; Casita Dominicana, with furniture made of repurposed wood; Marruecos, their newest addition, full of custom-made Moroccan textiles and ceramics. All are open on one side, with wide views of the bay acting as a fourth wall. “There are no room keys,” Nova told us. “Nature herself makes you feel protected here.”

We ordered our dinner to the sandy poolside lounge, where chef Mirko Casagrande arrived with a lionfish tartare. “We want to show that the DR has a different side,” he said, joining our conversation. “A rich natural side, with rivers, beaches, and mountains.” Casagrande hails from Milan, but settled in Las Galeras 20 years ago. His passion for the country shines in his cooking: grilled lobster with farro, avocado, and mango; octopus with honey and ginger; grilled vegetables from the garden, where free-range chickens wander among pumpkins, plantains, and cassava. “My kitchen is one hundred percent sustainable,” explained the chef, who decided to serve the invasive — and highly destructive — lionfish once lobster season ended. “For me, serving lionfish is an honor, because I’m doing good for the environment.”

After morning thunderstorms canceled our plans to hike the seven-beach trail, Luis and I opted for a drive to Aventura Rincón Ecolodge, winding past overgrown, palm-dotted fields and pastel shacks. This innovative solar-powered property and organic farm looks like a rambling garden, with five cabins inspired by Dominican campo life.

“We promote going back to your roots,” said Orquídea Susana, who at the time was overseeing the property’s permaculture initiatives. That means heirloom seeds, organic methods, and cooking what’s seasonal. She showed us vanilla, turmeric, cacao, taro, and papaya. “We have local varieties of fruit, like piña pan de azúcar,” Susana told us. “It tastes like sugar.” Thunder forced us to pick up our pace, though I was tempted to linger among the tall shoots of cranberry hibiscus.

Our colorful lunch spread included snapdragon tea and a salad of fresh-picked mizuna, avocado, and hibiscus, garnished with edible flowers. For dessert: slices of the local sweet pineapple and jalao, a baked coconut candy. As we walked it all off at nearby Playa Colorada, we didn’t see a soul.
