Puerto Plata became the first settlement in the New World at La Isabela, before it was eventually moved to Santo Domingo. Stroll Puerto Plata city center, lined with beautiful Victorian architecture from the 19th and 20th centuries. Visit Fort San Felipe, built in 1541 by the Spanish. The Amber Museum reveals the DR’s famous prehistoric gem, found in abundance in this area and said to be the clearest in the world, while the Ron Brugal factory offers a tour on the rum-making process. Cacao and coffee plantations tucked in Puerto Plata’s hills welcome visitors, and the nearby beach towns of Sosúa and Cabarete offer a world of beachfront fun, gourmet cuisine, culture–from baseball to a Jewish Museum–and nature attractions, including El Choco National Park and offshore Cayo Arena –also known as Paradise Island.
