Midway between Santiago and Santo Domingo, Bonao is often considered just a stop for a meal but its natural beauty high in the hills and the local art make it more of a destination. The Blanco River ecotouristic trails and Jima waterfalls are easy to access. Golf
Each February, in celebration of Carnival, Bonao features its own unique characters parading to the beat of the carnival drums on Sundays. Bonao carnival characters include the Santos de Palo, wooden representations of Catholic saints made by the artists who are grouped according to the saints they have created.

The biggest restaurants in Bonao are on the highway. Típico Bonao, Miguelina and Plaza Jacaranda have been in operation for many years satisfying Dominican food cravings and providing clean rest rooms for travelers. In town, there is a local pork eatery and several small diners.

Winner of two awards for sculpture in the prestigious E. León Jimenes Art Contest, Cristian Tiburcio has turned every single space in his own home in Bonao into a work of art, Gaudí style. Iconic Sights
The Complejo Ecoturístico Río Blanco, 17 miles (27 km) from Bonao, promotes rural, cultural and adventure tourism. Located by the Blanco River, it has youth hostel-style accommodations with Dominican cooking. Hiking trails go through dense forests of colorful birds, endemic fauna, green ebony, palms, and pine forests.

The Jima River falls are popular with locals. A trail through dense tropical forests makes it easy to enjoy three of the nine falls in the Reserva Científica Las Neblinas, a scientific reserve highly rated for bird watching.

This museum, cultural center and art school was founded by one of the greatest Dominican painters of all time, the late Cándido Bidó. Large murals mark the entrance to the center and gift shop. Calle Mella.
